A family member of mine was one of the children at the time the Initial Teaching Alphabet (i.t.a.) was introduced in the UK in the early 1960s. His reading and spelling to this day in 2018, 50+ years on, shows signs of i.t.a. in his grammar.

Here from an original reading book, which has been in the attic all that time, is a publication called 'peepl at wurk' the farmer.
First published in 1964 by Ladybird.

(I.T.A. or i.t.a.) was disbanded because many children were not being able to effectively transfer their I.T.A. reading skills to reading standard English orthography, and/or being generally confused by having to deal with two alphabets in their early years of reading.

Ironically, now we have text messages, social media spellings and emoticons which closely relate to I.T.A., a form of shorthand of its day.
