Caddisfly (Trichoptera) larva "swimming".
Skunk's Misery, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada.
April 10, 2017.
This Caddisfly and its case were found floating at the water's surface. To propel itself, the small larva would emerge almost entirely out of its case and flail around wildly.
The Caddisfly case is about 1/2 inch long. Once the larva grows larger, the case will no longer be buoyant, so the larva can clamber around on the bottom of the Vernal Pool without exposing so much of its body.

Caddisfly larva in Vernal Pool.
Shawnee State Forest, Adams Co, Ohio, USA.
April 23, 2015.
Great camouflage or what? Caddisfly larvae live inside a shelter they build from "found material": in this case (no pun intended), the shelter is made out of chewed up leaves. Some use bits of stone or pine needles.

Mayfly and Caddisfly nymphs in nature.
Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada.
August 7, 2008.
I was extremely fortunate to find a micro-environment where these fascinating creatures were naturally interacting. The mountain stream was crystal clear. A small pocket of still water, off to the side of the fast moving stream, was absolutely teeming with life! A most memorable afternoon. I returned the next day for more. :-)
