You can see some wounds on its flanks from the Snake.

It was amazing to see it recover fully. :-)

This is the rescued Salamander. :-) When I first spotted it, only the tippy tip of its tail was sticking out of the mouth of a Garter Snake. @@

Garter Snake eating a Northern Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber ruber).
Sand Barrens Woods, Ashtabula County, Ohio, USA.
April 18, 2005.

Bear with me--this actually has a happy ending! :-)

A friend from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were hiking at Sparrow Fen in Stark County, Ohio.

I noticed this Garter Snake, with just a tiny bit of bright orange in its mouth (much less than you can see here). I thought it was his tongue, but as I got closer to take his picture, he proceeded to regurgitate his prey. To my shock, out popped a Red Salamander!!

I stepped back to see what might happen next. After the salamander was almost totally out of his mouth, he began to attempt to swallow it again. I took a couple of pictures, then attempted to intercede on the beautiful salamander's behalf.

I know we should let nature take its course, BUT... I couldn't stand by and watch, when I knew the snake would be equally satisfied to eat an earthworm!

Thankfully, we were able to rescue the Salamander, which revived completely from this ordeal. We entrusted the Salamander, which had sustained a few flesh wounds, to another friend who was an expert with herptiles. He was able to treat the Salamander's wounds and it made a full recovery.

A few weeks later we were able to release it back to the Fen he called home. :-)
