Sunflower Maggot Flies (Strauzia longipennis) mating pair.
Mohican State Park, Ohio, USA.
May 21, 2005.

Fruit flies are fascinating. Rather than eat fruit, the larvae of this genus bore into Sunflower/Aster family stems.

Notice their camouflage-patterned wings and opalescent eyes. Simply amazing creatures!

Mating insects can provide great opportunities for photography, when you are lucky enough to find them so preoccupied.

Sunflower Maggot Fly (Strauzia longipennis) male, mating.
Mohican State Park, Ohio, USA.
May 21, 2005.

Single shot, of live, unrestrained subjects.
(I feel obliged to say that because so many people seem to think you can only get shots like this by stacking dozens of photographs and stitching them together by computer.)

Who knew that Fruit flies could be beautiful? Love the spiky hairdo!
