Eastern Tiger and Zebra Swallowtails puddling together at a sweet spot in the woods.
Shawnee State Forest, Ohio, USA.
April 14, 2006.

When I was a kid, my Dad had a butterfly book I particularly enjoyed. The endpapers featured a beautiful, idyllic illustration showing dozens of butterflies puddling together. I've always dreamed of witnessing something similar in nature. Where I live, in southern Ontario (Canada), a scene like this is extremely rare.

To my delight, puddling butterflies are much more often encountered in some of Ohio's beautiful State Parks, such as Mohican and Shawnee, within a day's drive from my house. I've still never witnessed a scene like the one on the book's endpapers, but this was a magical experience, nonetheless. :-)
