It was a long, muddy walk to the pub. At least the sun was shining!

Tintagel Castle with Merlins cave

Local legend states a version that Merlin lived in a cave below the castle of Tintagel while King Arthur grew up in the castle. In one version of the legend, Arthur was found by Merlin washed ashore in a cave below the castle, now known as Merlin's Cave. The poet Tennyson immortalised Merlin's Cave in his 'Idylls of the King', describing the waves bringing the infant Arthur to the shore and Merlin carrying him to the safety of the castle above.

In the Middle Ages, Tintagel's residents walked from one side of the site to the other using a narrow land bridge as high as the clifftops. But the crossing disappeared between the 14th and 17th centuries, leaving the castle divided by a natural chasm. Visitors used to then have to descend and ascend on stairs. The new bridge was built in 2019.
It being winter in Cornwall, the bridge was closed as was the castle on the other side and being good little visitors, we didn't hop over the barrier and go anyway.

History of the castle is here:
