Capella Granada, located in Finkenburg, Austria, is a gem of a mini chapel, designed by star Swiss architect Mario Botta. I really loved the structure — shaped like a garnet and clad with local larch wood inside, the chapel barely seats ten people. I had hoped to capture an image of the chapel together with its reflection in the adjacent glacial lake. The wind was too strong though to provide the mirror-like surface needed for my planned shot. The brilliant sunshine of the day, however, provided an opportunity for a different and hopefully more original photo. Glacial lakes often appear unnaturally blue because of the reflection of sunlight off so-called “rock flour”, silt in glacial meltwater produced by the friction of glaciers sliding. The intensity of the color is maximized in the summer when the flow of meltwater and silt is at its highest. On the day we were at the lake the sunlight caused the water to look a brilliant blue at certain angles while seeming to turn green around the lake’s edge. The resultant color tones were so saturated that I actually desaturated them slightly in the photo
