City of London Cemetery & Crematorium (1856).
Referred to as the "Grandest monument" in the cemetery this sculpture carved from a single piece of white Italian marble weighing 25 Tonnes, depicts the deposition of Christ (Based on the painting by Raphael) and is in memorial to Ordinary Seaman (Royal Navy), David John Vigiland, a 20yr old that died of fever in Mombasa, Africa in 1946.
His family fought long and hard with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to have his body repatriated and were successful in arranging his reinterment in 1952.
It is not known how the monument was purchased as David's father was a humble hairdresser in the East London docks.
