After enjoying this sunrise several weeks ago, I have been setting the alarm so as to check the sunrise each day hoping for a repeat of this one. This was the first image of the day after the 100 foot walk to the shoreline. On the left side of the image is my neighbor’s dock which was to be my next and final location to capture the sunrise (this image was uploaded previously). Unfortunately moments after setting up on the dock, a fisherman's boat would race across the lake disturbing the calm water. In a few weeks the lake will freeze over for the winter . . . but until then, I’ll be setting that morning alarm!

The weather has finally turned cold and the open water was disappearing quickly. After many cloudy days the weather had cleared and I finally had hopes for the evening's sunset.
I had my parking spot picked out but upon arrival it was occupied . . . fortunately I was able to pull off the edge road to park while not getting the car stuck in the snow. As I approached the location I discovered I wasn't alone . . . another photographer, Jeremy, had had similar ideas about this spot and had also parked in "my spot".
I have now discovered that the camera's battery does not last very long when the temperature is below zero . . . which was fine as I also learned I do not last very long when the wind chill is lower than -10F. This is the second of several images from that evening. This image is looking over the rock outcropping along the shore with the setting sun highlighting the distant clouds. It is so cold this evening that there is steam rising off the open water!

The weather had finally turned cold the first week into December and the open water was disappearing quickly. After many cloudy days the weather had cleared, and I finally had hopes for the evening's sunset.
I had to park off the edge of the road in the snow as my planned parking spot was occupied. As I approached the location, I discovered I wasn't alone . . . another photographer had had similar ideas about this location and had also parked in "my spot".
This image is my attempt to convey what I was feeling . . . COLD. This image is looking over the rock outcropping along the shore with the sunset light colouring the distant clouds. It is so cold this evening that there is steam rising off the open water being highlighted by the setting light! I ended up sitting in the snow to get this lower point of view . . . needless to say, I tried to work as quickly as possible ;-) I have also discovered that the camera's battery does not last very long when the temperature is below zero . . . which was fine as I also learned I do not last very long when the wind chill is lower than -10F (-23C). Little did I realize that that was a heat wave, as tonight the low will be -25F (-31.7C).
This sunset was a month ago when there was still open water . . . now it's a sheet of ice with snowmobiles traversing it from the shore to the various shelters set up for ice fishing, while others are out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the ice.
6 December 2017 edit: I am honored that this image was selected for inclusion in Flickr's Top-25 photos of 2017 gallery.

Beginning the first week of December, the weather finally turned cold enough that the open water was disappearing quickly. After many cloudy days the weather had cleared and I had hopes for the evening's sunset.
I donned winter gear, grabbed my kit, hopped in the car and drove to the location. I had spotted a level area to park off the road, but upon arriving had to park off the edge of the road in the snow as the spot was already occupied. As I approached the location I discovered I wasn't alone . . . another photographer had had similar ideas regarding this location and had also taken "my spot" for parking.
This image is looking toward the rock outcropping along the shore with the sunset light colouring the distant clouds. It is so cold this evening that there is steam rising off the open water being highlighted by the setting light! I ended up sitting in the snow to get this lower point of view . . . I worked as quickly as possible to capture the images as certain body parts were beginning to succumb to the cold. I also learned that the camera's battery does not last very long when the temperature is below zero . . . which was fine as I also learned I do not last very long when sitting in the snow and the wind chill is lower than -10F (-23C).
I managed to take a couple more shots before surrendering to the numbing cold and heading home . . . shivering, but satisfied.
This sunset was over two and a half months ago when there was still open water . . . now it's a sheet of ice. The shelters erected for ice fishing have been removed, while the snowmobiles and trucks no longer venture out onto slowly thinning ice . . . a sign that spring and warmer weather will eventually be here.
