After hearing others speak of the beauty of a Hebridean sunrise, it was something I hoped to be able to view during our holiday on the Isle of Lewis.

Waking in the middle of the night (3:30am), I peered out the window to see a hint of color on the horizon. Donning a robe, grab the camera kit, open the outside door, set up the tripod & camera, begin capturing the sunrise . . . . The image at operating end of camera is left to your imagination :-)

This image is moments before the sun breaks the horizon. This view taken at near high tide is from Carnish on the southern side of Traigh Uige (Uig Beach) located on the western coast of the Isle of Lewis. In the distance, left of center, is Forsnabhal with a communication tower on its summit.

Once the sun began to break the horizon the color in the sky disappeared quickly. It may have been due to the complete lack of clouds this morning.

This little building on Lewis caught my eye, partially for its condition but the sign was the clincher. The sign by the door states
"NO ADMITTANCE
Except on business"
Sorry no details are available for what the business is or was, but if it helps there is a giraffe in the image too :-)

Along the western coast of the Isle of Lewis just south of Uig on a dead end single lane road, B8011, is Mangarstadh (Mangersta) and these spectacular sea stacks in the Atlantic Ocean. Once parked, it was a relatively short walk for an elevated view overlooking the sea stacks from the cliff tops of Aird Feinis.

Passing squalls and strong winds made for interesting moments; shooting a few, then covering the gear with a large plastic bag, pulling the hood up and holding onto the tripod as a squall moves through, then repeat the procedure. This evening, near high tide, the ocean was churning with the strong winds driving the seas against the sea stacks. The evening sun was bringing out the color of the ocean, while at the same time the clouds of the passing squalls brought activity to the skies.

This was my favorite location on Lewis when I had visited last year, this visit was even better. The weather was trying at times but it was ideal for photography. I spent the evening observing the force of the seas against the resilience of the sea stacks . . . memorable . . . I will be back!

This section of coastline is in sharp contrast to the sandy beach and coastal plains of the east coast and areas just north of here on the west coast. The Isle of Lewis is the most northerly and largest island of the Outer Hebrides. It still maintains the Sunday Sabbath, the Gaelic language and other traditional practices including peat cutting. The people, the solitude and the beauty of the Isle of Lewis, once visited will draw you back.

Walking around the Callanish Standing Stones this morning required avoiding all the standing water as there were heavy rains the evening and night before. short periods of driving rain still had me seeking shelter behind the stones at times.

A daytime visit to the Calanais (Callanish) Standing Stones on this day found few tourists as the rain showers kept the crowds down. There were a few, so I would 'patiently' wait for them to disappear from view behind stones at the same time. :-)
