Jem Magazine - April 1960
Volume 3 - Number 6
A Treasure Chest of Rare Spice

"Fiction – Humor – Girls – Articles"

Jem was created by Joe Weider in 1956, reportedly at the behest of news distributors who wanted something else to sell in the Playboy vein. Weider was a Canadian bodybuilder who co-founded the International Federation of Bodybuilders with his brother and Betty Brosmer, his wife. He also originated the Mr. Olympia title, featured in the 1977 film Pumping Iron, which got both Arnold Schwarzenegger’s and Lou Ferrigno’s acting careers off the ground.

Betty was Weider’s wife, and was featured as the cover model on Jem several times. Betty was not only the highest-paid pin-up model in the U.S. at the time, partly due to quantity of work and partly due to having the foresight to own the copyrights to some of her images, which snagged her residuals that other models missed out, but she also co-authored several fitness books with her husband. The Weiders also published several other less-risqué magazines, including Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Fitness, and Shape.
