James M. Cain - The Postman Always Rings Twice
Pocket Books 443, 1947
Cover Artist: Tom Dunn

The Postman Always Rings Twice, first published by Knopf in February, 1934, rang the bell of popular favor to the tune of ten printings by May, 1946. Knopf also issued a paper-bound edition in October, 1935, and as interest in the book grew, it reappeared under the imprints of various publishers, among them an American Mercury edition in January, 1937; a Blue Ribbon edition in February, 1938; and an Illustrated Edition Monthly issue in November, 1942. By then the popularity of the book was so great that Grosset and Dunlap, who republished it in July, 1943, found it necessary to produce nine printings in four years. Meanwhile, a Garden City edition appeared in February, 1944, and a special edition for service men was published by Editions for the Armed Services in October, 1945, and reprinted a year later. That the demand was still not satisfied is demonstrated by the fact that a Tower Book edition appeared in August, 1946, and twelve years after its original appearance it was issued as a Fiction Book Club selection in October, 1946. The book also appeared in the United Kingdom, and was translated into French, Swedish, Norwegian, Hungarian, Danish, Italian, Spanish. and Portuguese. M-G-M, sensing the enormous popular appeal it would have, produced a movie based on the book in April, 1946, starring John Garfield and Lana Turner. This, the first Pocket Book edition, which is complete and unabridged, appeared in July, 1947.
