Masai Mara (MNC) | Kenya

As we get ready to head back to the Mara for our first Africa trip of the year, I thought that I'd close off our October 2019 visit with a final set of images of the female cheetah Kisaru - the 'supermum' who's currently raising six cubs.

Deeply saddened this morning to learn from Amboseli that Tim, the famous big tusker, passed away overnight. We were privileged to see and photograph him just last November, our first sighting of big tuskers. RIP Tim.

My sincere thanks to all who take the time to comment or add my images to their Favourites.

The black redstart disappeared behind a boulder for a minute or two, and we wondered what he was up to but didn't want to walk round for fear of spooking him. I'm so glad we didn't disturb him, because eventually he emerged with a good-sized caterpillar! He shook it around and bashed it on the ground quite a bit but my only sharp shots are from when he paused for a moment.

I'm hoping to ID the caterpillar at some point - maybe when I get the new book which is published next month: www.nhbs.com/field-guide-to-the-caterpillars-of-great-bri...

Seaton Hole Devon. Took hundreds of frames before getting one I was really happy with...

If you've ever spent any length of time watching these delightful little birds, you will know their markings seem to change with every movement. Sometimes looking almost black, sometimes almost grey... And if you get them just right, you can catch that black face with that striking silver crown... All the greys, black face and ear-coverts through to those brilliant white secondaries and that stunningly gorgeous red arse too.
