On his death in 1475 at the ripe old age of 75, Bartolomeo Colleoni, the Captain-General of the Republic of Venice, left a large sum with a request that a Statue of him on a steed be erected in the San Marco Piazzo. He got half his wish. A statue was duly modelled by Verrocchio then cast in bronze by Leopardi, but permission to install it in the piazza was denied. Instead, it was placed in the Campo San Giovanni e Paolo, the square next to which sits the Scuola Grande di San Marco (Venice Hospital) and the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo. And some houses and a ristorante. Not quite what old Bart had in mind methinks.

The Grand Canal, Venice. Yes, I know this comp has been shot millions of times before, from Rialto Bridge, but it was our first visit to Venice and our hotel was literally next to the bridge, so … why not. We were in Venice for 3 nights and left before it all went to custard.

Campo Rialto Novo is next the fish market near Rialto Bridge in Venice. There are only six people in frame and one of them is my wife. So you're asking, Venice? Where are all the tourists? Well, for one thing it was not long after sunrise, so the streets were still quite quiet. And the fishmarket was closed. And the corona virus was still confined then to China, so the only difference for Italy at that stage, in the first week of January, was less Chinese tourists.
