For once, the forecast let me down. On the strength of its clouds and rain at The Boneyard at Bombo on the NSW south coast I left home at 4.30am, only to find the weather all gone by the time I got to Bombo pre-dawn. This could have been the last shot of the short shoot, but fortunately I also had the IR 5D2 with me so it was only the last shot with the normal 5D2. Shot with the assistance of a Hoya ND x400 filter, a Lee 1.2 Soft Grad ND filter and a Lee 0.75 Hard Grad ND filter.

This photograph was taken shortly after dawn at The Boneyard on Bombo Headland, near Kiama on the south coast of NSW, Australia in August 2011. The basalt columns are the remnants of a quarry. In a large swell such as was occurring on the shoot, the waves crash into the columns and go straight up, so this shot was merely a question of timing. The shot was taken using a Canon TS-E 45mm f2.8 Tilt+Shift Lens as a prime.

When an earlier version of this photograph was originally published elsewhere, one person publicly questioned the authenticity of the shot, so listen up when I say it is a real photograph and has not been manipulated. On that occasion I replied to the accusation with copies of the shots taken immediately before and after to put the issue beyond doubt.

Since that time, at least one other photographer has gone to the exact same spot and copied the composition without acknowledging his inspiration. At the time of responding to his request for information on how to get there I did not know this was his intention, but I guess I'm flattered by all the attention his version garnered.

The action at the The Boneyard, on the Bombo Headland on the NSW South Coast, just after sunrise.

To give you an idea of scale, look closely and you'll see a black pin sticking up on the top of the far point. That's a life buoy on a pole, for people to throw to any fisherman washed off the rocks.

This shot was taken from the top of the basalt column in "The Boneyard", looking back to where I took that other shot. A sort of opposite view composition. Shot with an Infrared DSLR in May 2010.
