Is the title of one Issac Asimov's books and I think it is a fiting title for my first image of the Milky Way.

The light painting you see in the trees is purely by accident. That was caused by automobile headlights and was a stroke of dumb luck! I wish I could take credit for the effect but I can't though I am thankful it happened at the moment it did.

Some times I out think myself and this was one of them.

I was on my way up to Conway Summit where I had planned on using as my vantage point to shoot the comet, Neowise. As I was heading up US395 I saw this scene developing at Mono lake. I pulled over and stopped my car and tried a couple of different compositions and thought to myself, "this could be a really great sunset here" but I knew I was on the wrong side to try and get the comet especially if I wanted to use the lake as my foreground. I still felt that Conway would afford me with the best combination of vantage point, not a lot of light pollution and I possibly could use the hills to the northwest of Bridgeport as my foreground with the comet above them. One thing I had not counted on was the cloud cover. It was pretty significant but I kept waiting and waiting but as some of you know, you are sitting on the shoulder of US395 and cars are heading downgrade from there and I wasn't real comfortable with the idea of being parked there for a real long stretch so around 9:30 and the clouds moving towards me, I decided I had better pack up and leave.

So the moral of the story is, "a bird in the hand is worth a comet in the sky."

PS: I did get a shot of the comet down by Bishop but it is not very good. I haven't done a lot of night sky photography and my inexperience bit me on the rump this time.

Mt Tom is a 13,658 FT tall mountain that rises above Bishop. This beautiful mountain is gorgeous 12 months out of the year but is really magnificent at sunrise.

This is one of the dozen or so lakes that can be found in the Mammoth Lakes basin.

This image make me feel like I could step right through the looking glass and step right into the scene.
