Scan of a slide taken February 1991: Perhaps the first thing you notice is the lack of traffic; typical of a Sunday morning before Sunday shopping and this is the first of several uploads showing Routemasters on a special run to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the inaugural run by RM1, which was from Golders Green to Crystal Palace on ‘the two’. A few quotes from ‘The Bus We Loved’ by Travis Elborough about that first run on 8 February 1956; “…. [RM1] left Cricklewood Garage and headed for Golders Green, where it collected its first customers … [by] St John’s Wood the flurries of snow grew thicker … tumbled over Vauxhall Bridge for the shabby genteel suburbs of south London .. [and] finally reached the snow-capped hills of Crystal Palace.”

Scan of a slide taken in February 1991: Apart from the 51 forward-entrance Routemasters (the 50 they ordered plus the eventual acquisition of RMF1254) acquired by Northern General, no other provincial operator purchased the type from new. However, when London was disposing of surplus Routemasters in the 1980s, several provincial operators, including Southampton City Bus, purchased second hand vehicles. RM2037, still in Southampton colours, is seen here taking part in the event marking the 35th anniversary of RM1's first revenue earning run, which was on Route Two on 8th February 1956.
