Honey bee with a valuable hoard of golden yellow pollen from a hazel (corylus) tree in our garden.
The tree is covered in catkin tails which are the male part of the plant. Hazel is also wind pollinated when the grains fall from the catkins into the tiny red female flowers that are found on the top of each bunch of tassels. Pollen is a valuable early food source for honey bees.
