ORANGERY AND STABLES , TREDEGAR HOUSE

On the right hand side as one looks at Tredegar House, one can see the Great Stables and the the Orangery, which was added to the back of the building in the 1700s. Orangeries were essentially designed to conserve exotic fruits and tender greens during the harsh winter months. During the summer, potted apple, peach and citrus trees would be moved into the Orangery garden. The stables were probably built just after the house, and were obviously designed to reflect the style of the House.
Listed grade I as an exceptionally fine and architecturally distinctive example of a 17th century stable and for its important group value with Tredegar House
Tredegar House was the ancestral home of the Morgan Family, later lords Tredegar, for over 500 years. To give you an idea of their importance, at the end of the 18th century the Morgans owned over 40,000 acres in Monmouthshire, Breconshire and Glamorgan.
Their lives impacted on the population of south east Wales socially, economically and politically, and influenced the heritage of the area. On a visit to the House you will hear many stories of the family, while their portraits look at you from the walls. Some are tales of money and power, others centre around eccentricities and sadness. What is certain is that the Morgans are as intriguing as the House itself.
Most of the House we see today dates from the 1670s

DINING ROOM , TREDEGAR HOUSE
The New Hall leads to the Great Staircase ahead, the Dining Room to the right and the New Parlour to the left.
THE DINING ROOM
The Dining Room is dressed for a wedding banquet, with an array of food (mock of course) on display. The chairs around the table are all decorated .
The richness of colour and extravagance gives an indication , to the lives of the MORGAN FAMILIES .
OIL paintings of the ancestors hang on the panelled walls.

Flash was not allowed (National Trust ) -- so I have had to edit this image , a lot., as it was very dark .

THE GILT ROOM , TREDEGAR HOUSE
The Gilt Room was a very ornate room room used for entertaining guests. The centrepiece of the Gilt Room is without a doubt the ceiling painting depicting the triumph of religion and spirituality, it is nonetheless an impressive piece of art. – Not shown here .
The Gilt Room was used as a drawing room, where guests could relax after dinner, before retiring to their bedrooms. Lit by hundreds of candles, it must have been an impressive sight, and left no doubt as to the substantial wealth of the Morgan family. The walls are panelled in pine and painted to resemble walnut. The paintings around the room are also painted directly onto the panelling. The ceiling is the only remaining 17th century ceiling on the ground floor, and it has been restored to its original glory.
The Gilt Room was always the room that had retained most of its original decoration, but it always felt a little bare and so a professional film set designer was brought in to make it all feel a bit more lived-in and to convey the idea of the opulence that would have greeted Seventeenth Century visitors to Tredegar House. The designer was responsible for dressing and furnishing the whole of the ground floor of the North West wing, . where carved wood and marble is complemented by extensive gilding to create an even more overpowering effect. A day bed is now in the centre of the Gilt Room and visitors can LIE there admiring the wonderful ceiling. !! I did just that !
Opulence
The prosperity of the MORGANS , and the elegance of the period, is reflected in the opulent dressing in the GILT ROOM . The carvings, all original, are enhanced by rich fabrics.
Tredegar House is full of hidden stories . !!

TREDEGAR HOUSE , NEWPORT , SOUTH WALES

Main Entrance --

Tredegar House is an architectural wonder of Wales and one of the most significant late 17th century buildings in the whole of the Britain.
The earliest documented owner is Llewelyn ap Morgan, who was alive in 1402, whilst in 1540 John Leland mentions "a very faire place of stone", called Tredegar. Meanwhile Charles I and his retinue visited the house in 1645, which indicates the importance of the property.
Tredegar House is largely a creation of the late 17th century: between 1664 - 1672 it was rebuilt on a palatial scale when a sequence of state rooms was incorporated into the building. At this time the estate comprised 1,000 acres, of which 90 acres remain today.
