MERTHYR MAWR SAND DUNES
Conservation efforts to protect the dunes ,have included making them a Site of Special Scientific Interest . About 60 years ago ,the sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr, near Bridgend, were used in parts of the epic film 'Lawrence of Arabia.'
Made in 1962 and directed by David Lean, 'Lawrence of Arabia' ,immortalised the life of Tremadog-born archaeologist T.E. Lawrence.
Lawrence isn't the film's only Welsh connection, with local legend having it that the vast sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr, doubled for Middle Eastern desertscapes in some shots. They span over 320 hectares and are the second tallest in Europe .
Merthyr Mawr sand dunes are one of those places that, once visited, you'll never forget. These are some of the biggest dunes in the UK, in terms of height and expanse. You can spend an entire day here, and keep exploring new dunes and pathways .
The dune warren is an important wildlife habitat and site of scientific interest, which shelters a rich variety of plants and animals.
A walk through the dunes, will bring you out to this beautiful, expanse of sandy beach. This is inaccessible by land, apart from via the dunes, due to a wide river cutting you off.
The beach can be accessed from Newton.
