Seaweed farming is a common activity for women in Zanzibar and other coastal areas in East Africa. Seaweed farming involves cultivating different types of seaweed, primarily for commercial purposes. In Zanzibar, the most commonly farmed seaweed is Eucheuma cottonii and Kappaphycus alvarezii, which are used in various industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food additives.
During low tide, women wade into the shallow waters along the coastline to tend to their seaweed farms. They typically tie small pieces of seaweed to lines or nets anchored to the seabed. These lines are then suspended in the water column, allowing the seaweed to grow and flourish.
