This has for nearly 45 years been one of my favorite painting. "The Blind Girl" tells the complete story of two sisters looking after and taking care of each other.. the younger sister is the eyes and guide for her blind sister but the older sister is the bread winner and shelter for the young sister. The young girl is looking out from the cloak of her blind sister observing the wonders of nature's beautiful color, light and richness of the landscape, while her older sister can only feel the turf of grass in her hand and the warmth of the young sisters body... she is not even aware of the wonder of a butterfly on her own shoulder.
Millais first painted the background at Winchelsea, Essex in 1848 and added the girls in Perth. The Blind girl was Matilda Pruefoot and her younger sister was Isabella Nicol.

" La Donna Bella Finestra " (1881 unfinished) by Donta Gabrial Rossetti (1828-1982) at the Birmingham Musuem and Gallery..Rossetti was a co founder of the Pre-Raphaelite movement of painting along with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais.
The model for this painting is Jane Morris the wife of William Morris. She posed for Rossetti in 1870 but during the following decade Rossetti made several copies, this being the last and the only one with alburn hair.

"A Lady Holding a Rose" 1870-73) by Emma Sandys (1843-1877) at the Birmingham Musuem and Gallery.. Emma was the sister of Fredrick Sandys and like him painted many women in the Pre-Raphaelites style.
The honeysuckle represents temptation and the white rose purity..

"William Holman Hunt" 1827-10) self protrait (1845) at the Birmingham Musuem and Gallery.. Hunt painted this portrait when he was 17 and while he was a student at the Royal Academy Schools in London.
Hunt was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite movement of artist in 1848
