Resently a few flickr contacts have asked me how I get the results I do in photographing glass. Last night I tried a new idea out to see what would happen using a glass block that at one time had been used by my daughter for her college book shelves. You know what I mean, I had the common concrete version for my books. I went to our garage to dig one out. I couldn't remember what it looked like so I was quite surprised when I saw that it had vertical groves on one face and horizontal groves on the opposite face. After thinking about it I thought it might create interesting patterns. Cont....

I use in the way of camera equipment a Canon 40D, a Canon 60mm 1:2.8 micro lens, and on really close-up work add a Canon Extension Tube EF12 II. I also use a tripod to set my camera and the computer set in remote control to monitor on the image and setting on the screen. As all of you who go through the creative processes, I then had to find a subject to use with the glass block and think about what to do with it. In the end I used the old Grand Marnier Liqueur bottle and the Cream De Menthe Glaciale Bottle I have previously photographed. As you can see the first results were as I expected with interesting patterns being form through the block. Cont...

Block turned with horizontal to face closest to the camera. I have now added a candle as a light source and turned the main light off just to see what happens. A new problem I have is getting horizontal, horizontal and vertical, vertical. In the end I had to do it in photoshop. All adjustments to colour. light, contrast, saturation were done in RAW format using the Canon supplied software. Cont...

I took several photographs moving the camera, bottles and candle around to see what happens. At the time I was pleased but wanted to get more light in to brighten the bottle. Also looking at what happens to the patterns when changing the focus and depth of field using higher and lower shutter speeds. You can read the camera information on each image properties. Cont...

As I wasn't getting the results I want with the light I got out my 24" reflector and put the gold cover on it. That really made a difference and things started to happen. As you can see the patterns looked as though there are parts of faces in it and started melting into the glass. I realized I still need more light. Cont...
