One of the swampy areas leading to the Gungywamp site. Amazing and mysterious location. Standing stones that align with solar events, "calendar" chambers, root cellars, etc. A lot like America's Stonehenge in New Hampshire. Getting got a creepy feeling while exploring in there.

Gungywamp in Groton, CT
"...like a scene from the swamps of Louisiana or the mind of Poe on opium." - Dean Koontz
A Little Background from the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center
The Gungywamp in Groton, Connecticut, is a complex of stone structures. Much of it is like most any place in New England where colonists were using the available rocks to build house foundations, walls, barns and root cellars. There have been many interpretations of the structures based on their similarities to stone structures in other areas where they had well documented uses.
The archaeological excavations and document research indicate that the Gungywamp complex contains paleo and woodland Native American artifacts (stone implements and pottery shards) and colonial and Early American structures and artifacts. Earliest written primary source documentation indicates that Native Americans throughout Northeast America (and a good deal of the rest of North America) usually built their homes as seasonal structures from trees (saplings and bark) and other plants.
Native American oral traditions relate a story of the land as having a sacred landscape marked by natural and man erected markers of stone to mark the rising and setting of the sun and other celestial bodies throughout the seasons.
