Built between 1945-49 in Quincy, the USS Salem never saw combat but was instrumental during the Cold War at keeping the Soviets at bay. One of just three Des Moines-class heavy cruisers ever built, she was the last all-gun heavy cruiser to enter commission.
Decommissioned in 1959, the USS Salem returned to its birthplace of Quincy in 1994 and has become a part of the United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum.
It has also become one of New England’s most visited haunts, and was included in a season five episode of SyFy’s Ghost Hunters.
Nearly everyone who has investigated the Salem has returned with some kind of experience and numerous examples of Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP), but this is also one location where ghosts appear to be seen as much as heard. Apparitions are reported throughout the ship. There’s John, an elderly volunteer who was found dead on the ship, yet is said to still roam about the anchor room. Women are spotted in the birthing room, with frequent EVP clips screaming for someone to “Get it out!” Then there’s the ghost in the machine (shop).
No matter where you go throughout the 717-foot long ship, there’s a report of some kind of activity. Don’t miss out on your chance to investigate one of the world’s most haunted ships!
