Today January 17th 2019 is the Funeral of my Father Geoffrey Ernest Spafford. I want it to be a Celebration of his long life. Until about six months ago he was independent and driving around in his little car. When I was age 10 on December 26th, 1958 my Dad wrote the following quote of Saint Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin, in my autograph book:

Good, Better, Best,

Never let it rest,

Until your good is better,

And your Better is Best.

This quote applied to my Dad Geoff Spafford in everything he did in life. He was a meticulous person.

Geoffrey Spafford was a WWII War veteran and took part in the historic D-Day + 1 landing, which has its 75th anniversary later this year in June 2019. Geoff served in Gibraltar, France, Luxemburg, Brussels, Ostend and eventually Hamburg in Germany. Dad told my sister that the war was so bad that he did not want to talk about it. However, in later life my Dad was very proud of serving in The Royal Engineers. He told me that this was the worst time in his life but the most memorable. He said that the Camaraderie was brilliant and that he got the opportunity to travel. Geoff Spafford was able to keep a lifelong friendship with his fellow solder Ken, in fact his wife Odette a French girl, sent him a Christmas card last year which brought him a lot of pleasure. Dad took an immense interest with anything to do with the Second World War.

In fact, Geoff Spafford was well read and was somewhat of an historian having a keen interest in The Second World War, Egyptology and the Roman Empire. I have been privileged to have spent time with him at the British Museum and the Imperial War Museum. He actually passed away with a book of the British Museum by his bed side.

Geoff Spafford was a Crane Driver on the local Scunthorpe Steel Works. Being just a Crane Driver is an understatement. Dad had the top job as the operator of the Anchor BOS plant, Basic Oxygen Steelmaking 400 ton Crane. He was brilliant at judging distances with such precision. Throughout his whole career Geoff was never ever late for work. How many people can say that? Again, Geoff developed lifelong friendships with his work mates Jim Jacques and Ron Brown, amongst others.

May his Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
