When we planned our trip to Louisiana, a bucket-list item quickly became getting some good Cottonmouth shots. I enjoy the danger in photographing dangerous animals, but in the case of snakes…I truly love their heartless eyes.

When we signed up for a swamp tour, the lady I spoke to said with a laugh “Oh no problem, you will see snakes!” Sweeter words have never been heard!

Months went by with those words ringing between my ears like sugar plums at Christmas time…and then we met our tour guide. He was a very knowledgeable skipper who loved the wild and sharing his backyard with strangers. Upon our meeting, I asked for him to put us on some cottonmouths…to which he replied, “I haven’t seen one in a long time…where you see a lot of gators, you don’t see snakes…they eat em!” Never have I had a sentence make so much sense and be so disappointing at the same time! We did our excursion and did see dozens and dozens of gators…and no snakes.

The next day we were visiting Avery Island and I had wondered off the beaten path by myself looking for something to capture. It wasn’t long before this fellow presented itself right in front of me, frozen, just hoping that I would pass.

I grabbed a shot of this Green Snake (smooth or rough species…I do not know) while focusing on his round little eye. An eye that deflated all feelings of danger and looks to have a little bit of a soul. It was a blessing none the less.
