While on a boat ride into the Everglades National Park we saw many American White Pelicans in flight or resting on sand bars on small islands. This is only a portion of the more than 100 pelicans that we saw on one island.

Although these birds breed in Canada's prairie provinces and our territories, I had only seen one before. A wayward American White Pelican that had appeared, briefly, in Ottawa, Ontario a number of years ago and I only managed a very distant, blurred image.

Warning graphic image!

I was in a local park when I spotted a number of White Ibises one the beach. One was carrying a very long thing. When I made my way over to them, I realised that this bird had caught an Eastern Glass Lizard (a legless lizard species).

I observed it over the next 20 minutes or so trying everything that it could to swallow it. It even spent several minutes in the lake repeatedly dunking it in the water, perhaps hoping that moistening it might help it slide down more easily. It also had to keep it away from other birds.

Despite all of its efforts I never saw it completely succeed.

I was photographing a Common Gallinule perched on a water channel dam when a second bird swam up. In seconds a fight broke out. I wasn't expecting anything and just managed to capture this image as the first bird nearly left the top left of my camera frame.

There was a third bird in the water nearby which I assume was the mate of bird 2. Bird 2 continued to chase bird 1 along the waterway fro quite a distance.

Here is another image of a Northern Hawk Owl launching from its perch on a dead tree top. This composite was created in Photoshop using consecutive images from its launch from the tree top.

In frame 2 the bird had raised its wings up and would have obscured the first frame had I included it.

I am very happy with how this sequence turned out despite it being a very large crop.

Original sequential images were created on Dec 23, 2019, west of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

I saw this bird while looking for Bald and Golden Eagles near Eardley, Québec last week.. It was only my second time photographing a Northern Shrike.

The bird was perched high up in a tree so the shooting angle was steep and distance was great.
