Sundown happens too soon now. Daylight savings Time ended and hopefully our wet season will start.
The month started with a rainbow. And it just got better.
We got some new birds this month and I want to thank the people who shared their sightings. Some of you are my flickr friends. : )
New birds include the ones in the second row. Scissor-tailed flycatcher (I know!) Purple Finch ( Dave Moody quote “Look between the legs”), Northern Red Bishop (Thank you W9) Long-tailed Duck, Marsh Wren and in the bottom right corner the Grasshopper Sparrow. Not pictured the Pacific Loon ( Another photographer stepped in front of him before I could fire off a shot) and the Glaucous Gull because the sky was overcast, the water grey, and … well he’s a gull.
We worked the hardest for the Long-tailed Duck. We were tested. The cold wind cut through our clothes and we flirted with an ER trip climbing over slippery boulders to get closer. Luckily he hung around and we were able to shoot him in better light and weather on another day. But my favorite photos were taken the first day. More drama.
As always, I am inspired and informed by your photos and adventures. If you haven’t posted anything in a while it’s time to dust off your camera.

October was a lot of fun. Many birds came to visit the Magic Bowl, a chrome and emerald oasis in a city turning brown from drought. A visitor blown off course inspired cheers from the small crowd who came just for him. Yellow throated Warbler. Life bird. The “secret stairs” are nearby, an escape route in case of Tsunami. Madrona Marsh had the bold color-block faced Lark Sparrows singing their sweet song. Ballona Freshwater Marsh was busy with coots and biting bugs. New bugs that bite in broad daylight. The Bushtits were dining on teensie hot dogs. We saw Red breasted Nuthatches and Mountain Chickadees at the Getty Villa. Days earlier we chased those nuthatches all over South Coast Botanic Garden. And Inceville ( Pacific Palisades.) Not too far from home and errands. The Bushtits, Spotted Towhees, California Towhees, Wrentits, quail, scrub jays and now White Crowned Sparrows check in for the bowls of water we bring. The Blue gray Gnatcatchers, Oak Titmice, and Ruby crowned Kinglets only tease us. I fear that migration is ending and our window to see these amazing creatures is closing. Let’s see what November will bring. As always, I am inspired by what you see and photograph and appreciate your support.

Warblers are beginning to move through. We got a lifer. The Chestnut sided Warbler… has been called the Chest Nut sider Warbler. Yes. We know who you are. All it took was a long car ride in 100 degree heat to see a lifer. The Egyptian Goose. Lou and Chris met us there. Wendy gave us a tour of Mile Square Park. I was pulling in some big favors. It was my birthday (shhhh.) And this month we caught a very surprising new bird. The Black-throated Sparrow. A handsome bird, perhaps not obvious in my photos. We visited Huntington Mile Square Park, Temescal Canyon, Los Liones Canyon, South Coast Botanic Gardens, Malibu Lagoon, Ballona Freshwater Marsh, Woodlawn Cemetery … we hadn’t been there in a while. So many exciting birds but making this collage was tough. Too many dirt colored birds. Wrentits, Bushtits, Thrashers… my favorites. After all, this is the Wild Wild West. No wuckkers, Mate.

W9 found another Bittern... I know! Then we got the Blue Grosbeak (LIFER) at Madrona. Also the dowitchers ( I am thinking Long-billed. Fresh water. But the peanut gallery voted Short-billed. Alas. No good photos.) The Common Yellowthroat came out and did his best Rubber Ducky imitation. Grosbeaks. Orioles. Thrashers. Loud Parrots! Tiny Bushtits and Blue gray Gnatcatchers. The Cactus Wrens (LIFER) put on a show at Terranea. Gosh. It was a fun month. But we are approaching migration so hang on to your hats. Thank you for checking in.
