A fast click with the camera turned out to be a Bushtit in focus. A pleasant surprise.
An oldie. The photo and not the bird.

Merry Christmas. I am "bushed" after trying to catch one of my favorite birds. Weather was harsh. I had to wear a jacket and long pants. It gets worse.... Jerry wants pancakes for dinner. All best wishes to my flickr family/tribe. BTW this is a Bushtit. One of our local celebrities too busy to pose nicely.

There doesn't seem to be much information about these birds out there.... so, let's get started. The older ones develop a dark unibrow so if you want a photo of a cute Golden-crowned Sparrow get them while they are young. These birds are shy but not the shyest of the bunch. Bigger birds push them around. They make spaceship noises more often than they sing "No gold here..." They only visit Southern California during migration. They stay in small flocks and hang out with the White-crowned Sparrows and the oddball White-throated Sparrow. The Templars kept them in gilded cages on their sea journeys for good luck. ( reference: The Curse of Oak Island.)

"Seven Golden-crowned Sparrows returned to their wintering grounds with tags and harness missing. We strongly suspect that these individuals were successful at removing their tags simply by picking at the fibrous Kevlar thread harness, as indicated by the condition of harnesses on recaptured tagged birds during both seasons. Hence, we suggest that alternate harness materials be used for this (and likely other) thick-billed species...."

We are energized by our sightings of the oystercatchers. Suddenly an Osprey is flying overhead. We watch as he makes a slow U-turn in the air. As a group Jerry, W9, and I chant "Please land please land please land." And he does. He takes his sweet time eating his fresh fish lunch. My neck is sort of killing me and the heavy camera is stressing my shoulder. I don't dare go back to the car to get the tripod. I breathe and do my best not to scrunch up my shoulders. I balance on a low wall. W9 and I are clicking off shots.
A half dozen grey haired folks meander by as one gentlemen stops to ask about the .... OK. Someone is asking about my gear. Life Pro tip: to garner more attention pop for the Canon lens instead of the Sigma. You will have more total strangers wave at you and try to strike up a conversation.
I am being peppered with questions. I can feel W9 smirking as if to say, “your turn,” even though my eyes are on the bird. Grey hair launches into tales of hiking 6 miles barefoot in the snow to develop film. Unable to afford the store bought chemicals he used coffee and laundry soda.
I finally say, without prejudice, that I'm a bird watcher, not a photographer.
...I have lost track of time and place. The spell is broken when the Osprey finishes his leisurely lunch and lifts off leaving not a scrap for the crows.

"Caffeine, that magical component of coffee, tea, and many soft drinks, is an excellent reducer and can work well as a developing agent. Vitamin C can also do the job, as well as vanilla extract, iron supplement tablets, and a number of other common materials when properly applied."
