We are a compatible bunch and kept each other company during the 1 and 1/2 hour trip in Marylou's car. Our target bird: Reddish Egret and possibly the Tri-colored Heron.
The egret is a rare bird for us but so is the Ovenbird. That skulker. Don't get me started....
But the egret is flashy, silly, showy, and spirited.

We were just beyond the bridge near the parking lot at the reserve when Emma points and shouts "There he is!" And Ca-ching! W9 and I have another life bird.
It was a brief flyby. So off we go to get those shots we all want. Good light, good pose, good background, eye contact, eye gleam, crunchy crispy detail.
We're pretty sure there are at least two ReEg. We pass other birders and exchange intel.
Emma spots the Reddish Egret again. This time backlit, doing a dance in ankle deep water. He starts out standing his full height taking deep strides through the water. His pace quickens. He leans forward and seems to be using his wings to shade the water. He jumps up flapping those amazing feathered appendages. Lifting off then landing.
Nothing predictable.
Everything flamboyant.
He keeps his distance. We try to sneak in closer and off he flies.

Habitats include open water, mudflats, salt marsh, coastal dunes, seabird nesting islands, riparian, and freshwater marsh. More than 200 avian species have been identified at Bolsa Chica and the reserve is very popular with birders and photographers."
