A few weeks ago The news was that Snowy Plovers were nesting on Santa Monica beaches. We live here. Let's GO! I yell to Jerry.
We are blessed with popular and beautiful beaches. Chances are the Malibu Beach scenes in the movies you've seen were filmed here. We park up above at Palisades Park and walk... and walk and cross busy Pacific Coast Highway via the pedestrian overpass around and around down the spiraled staircase.... out to the bike path and beyond. We can see support polls that connect a flexible barrier. This must be the spot. I'm getting a bit excited. It would be a hike to walk to this point from our front door but it's do-able. We search and trudge though the soft sand. We find two cordoned areas. Both looking rather sterile. I hate to give up but give up I do. Then I'm starting to hate the reporter who wrote such a glowing report. No Snowy Plovers here since 1949, bla bla bla....
Back home I do a little more research to find that recent high winds ruined the plovers nests.
A footprint in the sand meets a Snowy Plovers qualifications for a home. Our beaches are crammed with people on any given weekend.
But what if? Wouldn't it be nice?

"The Pacific Coast population of western snowy plover was listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1993, because of habitat loss, impacts from non-native predators and other factors. At the time of listing, the California population was estimated to be about 1,300 adults. In 2016, the population was estimated to have increased to a little more than 1,800 adults."
