Le cor des Alpes servait autrefois pour communiquer à distance en montagne. Il est en usage depuis le XIVe siècle en Suisse, mais aussi dans la plupart des régions montagneuses d'Europe, des Alpes française aux Carpates.
Fait en épicéa ou en pin, il mesure environs 3 mètres 40, mais certains modèles ont 18 mètres. Il se scinde en deux ou trois parties pour être plus aisément transportable ou peut être taillé d'une seule pièce dans un arbre couché.
Il existe des versions modernes en fibre de carbone, plus légères et télescopiques, qui peuvent se transformer en d'autres instruments proches, comme le didjeridoo des aborigènes d'Australie ou le büchel

Since the 14th century, the Alpenhorns were used for communication in Switzeland and in most mountainous regions of Europe, from the French Alps to the Carpathians.
Carved in natural wood (spruce or pine) it is 3 meters 40 tall (average size), but some are 18 meters long. They are in two or three parts (for transport) or cut in a single long tree.
You can find now modern versions in carbon fiber, lighter and telescopic : they can be modificated to be used as similar instruments such as the Australian didjeridoo and the büchel.
