The lower larger white rock layer was formed by an ancient sea that covered the area ages ago. This is the rock that is important to the quarry as it makes a great aggregate for cement. Wendling Quarry is one of the few places in Iowa it can be found.

Wendling Quarry
Chert is a very fine-grained quartz and flint. It was used by Native Americans for making arrowheads and spear points because it fractures and flakes easily. It is found in nodules in the limestone layers which you can see in the center of the image.

All the rubble is from a recent blast of the wall section. Now big end-loaders will move it to be processed.
