This is inside the engine workshop of Ratmalana engineering works in Sri Lanka. The worker is flattening the cylinder head of an Alco engine. I was staggered that this process was being done by hand.
I remember as a teenager doing this same process on my Yamaha DT 50 motorbike to improve compression, make a perfect seal and increase power.
If there are any railway engineers looking , do you do this process in British workshops ?

The Darjeeling Himalayan Mountain Railway is a shadow of its former self. No longer can you climbe the tortuous 50 mile route from New Jalpaigiri to Darjeeling on a steam train as the B class 0-4-0s only work a 4 mile section to Ghum from Darjeeling, that being said it is the steepest part of the line and pushes the locos to their limit.
Here we see 782 on the outskirts of Darjeeling returning from. Ghum.

I have re edited this shot taken 6 years ago. Where does the time go ? How i wish i had a drone back then.
Early morning at Somerleyton. I rose early as the forecast was for a partially sunny day, the best for a while. I knew a handful of the shots i wanted during this trip but wasn't sure how or if i would make them happen. Its more of a feel than an image.
My recci on this spot paid off and whilst not an in ya face picture of a train, The distinctive shape of 37425 leads the 0711 ECS from Crown Point at Norwich to Lowestoft with 37419 on the rear.
I wanted a shot that was unmistakably Suffolk or Norfolk I'm actually not sure. I think i must be on the border. Anyway maybe i should say the Broads.

Barton Hill depot in Bristol will be the temporary home for 20901 and 20905 for the next 5 weeks whilst they undergo a repaint into Balfour Beatty livery.
The depot opened in 1840 as a locomotive depot until 1870 when it became a carriage and wagon servicing facility.
I remember it being the home of the Blue Pullman in the early 70s. It was used by RES for a little bit in the mid 90s and went into Arriva ownership in 2011.
Its great to see some locomotives from the 1960s in a depot building dating back to the 1840s.

This mechanical engineer is engaged with refurbishing the suspension coils from various locomotives and other rolling stock. He is chipping away years of track crud and carriage discharge.
He is in the wheel and bogie workshop in Ratmalana railway works south of Colombo in Sri Lanka. The works has a footprint of 56 acres and services the vast majority of Sri Lanka's fleet of ageing diesel locomotives.
