For years now, dependant on conditions being suitable, I've been looking at the night sky on August 12th ... checking out the Perseids meteor shower. This was taken a short while ago, though ... on the night of August 11th ... well, actually the very early morning of August 12th ... not the peak viewing time ... that will occur tonight ... but conditions were so good I decided to 'make hay while the sun shines' ... or, just the opposite, actually :-) ... ie check out the Perseids while the sky was dark and perfectly cloudless. I got a number of shots with meteors, but this one, little though it is, has such pretty colors I felt I just had to share it with you.

I've photographed them before, but on film, never digital. This, though, was taken with the Nikon D300 and the Sigma 8-16mm wide angle lens. If conditions are good tonight, I just might try again.

In the photograph, besides the meteor, you can see the constellations Perseus, the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, and Cassiopeia ... or, parts of them, anyway. By the way, if you're a contact, to appreciate the meteor a little better, check it out in the Original or one of the larger sizes.

Taken near West St. Modeste on the Labrador Coast. The island of Newfoundland is visible in the background.

I took this while on the way home to Newfoundland from a second fly fishing trip for Atlantic Salmon in Labrador this summer. The berg had melted quite a bit from the day we saw it when we first arrived for this trip. By the way, this is not the same berg I uploaded a photo of earlier. That one I photographed on the first trip we made to The Big Land.

This is the deserted lighthouse at Flower's Cove on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. It is on an island and the Strait of Belle Isle surrounding it is frozen, so this is what allowed me to take the photograph with so few distracting elements. When I first saw what I had, it reminded me somewhat of a scene one might see on the prairies.

I do have other shots of this structure ... some of them closer. In fact, I have at least one summer shot uploaded to Flickr that I never ever made visible. Since I now have this view, I may go back and find that one and make it visible for comparison purposes.

I've placed the photograph on the map. If you're interested you can click on the map to the right ... use the satelite view ... and zoom in ... and you will see the island that the lighthouse is on.

This is route 480. Because it ends at the tiny coastal settlement of Burgeo, it is more commonly known as the Burgeo Road. It may not look like it, but there is not as much snow out this way. I even caught a quick glimpse of a robin.

Goose Cove is a tiny settlement near the tip of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. There really is a cove here, but because of the angle this photograph was taken from, you just can't see it. However, I took the shot here because I was captivated by the late afternoon light on the hills and houses when the scene opened up before me.

I've been here a number of times before, but not during the spring ... or, considering what our weather is like this year, maybe I should say winter. There is a short walking trail which begins where the road ends in the settlement. That trail is a great place from which to see icebergs and whales in season. During the summer of 2011 when the Petermanm ice island (PII-A), which had earlier broken off the Petermann Glacier in Greenland, had reached this area, literally hundreds of bergs could be seen from that trail. I have shots of some of them here on my photostream and if you search "Goose Cove, Newfoundland" here on Flickr, you will see lots more.
