At the northwest corner of Macedonia, right at the convergence of the borders of Greece, Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Prespes Lakes region is one of the most important natural sights of the country. The area, at an altitude of 835 meters (2,500 feet), is a protected natural habitat, a national park and one of the most important nature reserves in Europe.

The Prespes lakes region is an aquatic habitat and is defined by the streams, small rivers and underwater aquifiers that feed the lakes with fresh water. The lakes are separated by a narrow strip of land, about 3 km (2 miles) long and 200 m (600 feet) wide, except at a point near Koula, where they are linked with a canal.

The region is famous for its natural beauty and unique biodiversity. Scientists and naturalists have identified here more than 1,500 kinds of plants, out of about a total of 6 thousand that grow in the whole of Greece, of which two grow only in Prespes. The area is home to more than 40 kinds of mammals, among them some of the most rare in Europe, like the brown bear (Ursus arctos), the wolf (Canis lupus), the otter (Lutra lutra), and the wold goat (Rupicapra rupicapra). In addition, 11 kinds of amphibians, 22 kinds of reptiles and 17 kinds of fish, of which 8 live only in Greece
