Look what arrived today! My new-to-me near mint 1960s Leica Elmar 135mm f4!

First test shot and it is sharp at f4 on my M9. Very happy! :)

I really like it too and so cheap vs. most Leica lenses.

New Arrivals - my new Leica 50s!! I'm interested to see how they compare to my Voigtlander and Zeiss (Sonnar + Planar lenses).

Left - Leica Summilux 50mm f1.4 ASPH ('Lux)

Right - Leica Summincron 50mm f2 ('Cron)

Photo shot with my amazing 1960s Leica Elmar 135mm f4 lens on my Leica M9. 75% crop to tidy up the photo. Look at the sharpness at f4 and the very shallow DOF - yes that is me in the background taking the photo into a dusty mirror. I'm very impressed, espcially considering the low cost.

Mint condition Elmar 135/4.. the glass and aperture blades look like they were made in 2013 not 40+ years ago!

This photo was focused handheld without a magnifier viewfinder at f4 and close to minimal focal length. The picture you see in the viewfinder is small but it is still possible to focus accurately quite easily. This was about the 8th photo I took in total trying different angles for composition.

For those new to my stream I normally use non-Leica lenses on my Leica m9 for my Leica wedding photography, fashion photography and portraiture. I've just bought 3 Leica lenses and i'll put them up against my Zeiss and Voigtlander glass. I'm happy to keep which ever lenses suit my style best regardless of the make. Over the next few months i'll be testing the Leica 50/1.4 Summilux ASPH, Leica 50/2 Summicron and Leica 135/4 Elmar in various conditions and environments and will report back my results on my blog. Coming soon!

The Clothes Show - NEC Birmingham

Sample shot from yesterday using Leica M9 + Leica Elmar 135mm f4

The Elmar 135/4 proved very tough to use on moving subjects, 2 reasons, 1) the small image in the viewfinder for focusing (in dim light) and 2) the focus thrown (if correct term - number of turns of the lens to go from shortest focal length to infinity) - very big!

I wanted to try this 1960s manual focus slow(ish) lens for event photography to see how it coped. In the low light I had the Leica M9 ISO at 2500 for some photos so it would not be suitable for paying clients but it was good to test.

I have the very capable but slightly (much much!!) larger Nikkor 200mm f2 I can use on my D800 for shots like this. I think the Elmar would fit in the hood of the Nikkor! :)

Still, a good test to try. I will not consider the Leica Elmar for indoor wedding photography.

This photo does not look that sharp but if you look closely the detail are there. Please note that at close range in good light the Elmar excels as shown in some of my previous posts such as studio portraits.

Leica M9 + Leica Elmar 135/4 (1960s Chrome)

Model - Ana

The Leica Elmar 135mm must be one of the best value for money Leica lenses available and is close to being on a par with the little CV Nokton 40/1.4 in terms of cheapest lenses for Leica cameras.

It's 135mm yet 39mm filter size and very lightweight. Easy to focus up close without magnifier at f4... less so at a distance.
