Old Perithia (Palea Perithia) is the oldest village on Corfu, dating back to the 14th century. It was built high in the mountains to protect the inhabitants from pirate attacks and malaria on the coast but was abandoned in the 1960s when tourism gave job opportunities on the coast.
In the last 15 years the fortunes of the village have changed again. Around 30% of the old buildings have now been restored. There are now a number of taveras and accommodation for the tourists who make the trip up the winding road to the village. The cooler climate this far up meant that the vegetation was even more plentiful, as were the butterflies, bugs and birds that inhabited it.
A couple more shots in the comment below - the first is one of the village tavernas and the second, the old school.
