The airport served as an auxilliary base for the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. After which it was transferred back to the county for commercial use and fire fighting operations by the U.S. Forest Service.

When I first saw it I did a double take. A real throwback to the 40's.

Currently Siskyou County is in the process of trying to seceed from California and become the 51st state along with a few other counties in northern California.

A metal sculpture seen in the town of Montague, California. Cattle were brought here by the cowboys to be shipped to Portland and San Francisco.

If you draw a line from Portland
To the San Francisco Bay
You will find the town of Montague
Lies just about half way.

From the deserts of Nevada
And from Eastern Oregon too,
Cowboys brought the cattle,
To the trains in Montague.

As small towns in the West,
Struggle to survive,
The spirit of the Cowboy
Forever, stays alive.
