While photographing this tree I was unexpectedly visited by the field owner. It appeared we were both curious about something: I wanted to know why this one solitary tree was spared and he wanted to know why I was trespassing on his property.

After explaining what I was doing and showing him some of the pictures on the back of my camera I inquired about the tree. “Is there a reason why field owners always leave one tree standing amidst whatever flavor of crop is sprouting for that particular season?” A resounding “no” echoed from his vocal chords. “It just happens and there’s no rhyme or reason.” Well! Now I can finally sleep at night because that question has bugged me for years. (I’m serious!).

Btw: I returned a couple of weeks later and gave him a 12” X 18” print of his field. Since he was nice enough not to kick me off his property it was the least I could do.
