My last sighting of a Great Gray Owl was Oct 26, 2014. Today, I saw three.
Great Gray Owl 2 of 3 seen north of Water Valley, AB on Mar 15. Nice way to end an almost five month drought without a sighting. The light snow that started falling while I was up there was an added bonus.

Hey everybody! Not usually one to toot my own horn, but I just have to this time. Yours truly managed to pick off top prize in the CPAWS Capture the Wild Photo Contest 2012 with this shot taken north of Water Valley back in March. I submitted this pic a while back and just got the e-mail letting me know I won yesterday. What a thrill! This is a first for me. Took a run NW of the city out to the Cochrane/Water Valley area.
First great gray owl I've seen since mid July. Someone once told me that after a rainstorm is a good time to go find them. It rained and then I found one, so I'm going with that for now. Seen on Grand Valley Rd.
Interesting note. Three years ago I took my nephew out with his new Nikon to look for hawks and owls to shoot. This is the exact spot and same exact perch we found one on for his first GGO sighting. He was quite excited. It let us get as close as this one let me.
