Among the temple cars or chariots of India, the Thiruvarur Azhi Ther (big ratham) of Sri Tyagaraja Swamy (Lord Shiva) temple holds a prominent place. It is part of Panguni Uthiram festivities in April or May. There is an old saying in Tamil about the chariot: "Thiruvarur Ther Azagu". It is one a few heaviest (weighing more than 400 tons) and tallest rathams (96 feet tall; roughly nine story building) - chariots in India. The base of the chariot is 36 feet tall; dimension 31 feet by 31 feet with a tare weight of 300 tons.
It is an amazing sight to watch the giant chariot mildly swaying and passing by the water tank, being pulled by devotees in thousands and pushed from behind it by heavy duty bulldozers.

ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் பங்குனி உத்திர திருவிழாவின் நிறைவாக ஆழித்தேரோட்டம் நடைபெறுவது வழக்கம். அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட ஆழித்தேரின் உயரம் 96 அடியாகும். இதன் மொத்த எடை 300 டன். திருச்சி பெல் நிறுவனம் மூலம் 4 இரும்பு சக்கரங்களிலும் ஹைட்ராலிக் பிரேக் பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. மிக பிரமாண்டமான ஆழித்தேரில் தியாகராஜர் வீற்றிருக்க 4 வீதிகளில் வீதி உலா வரும் அழகு பார்ப்பதற்கு கண்கொள்ளாக்காட்சியாக இருக்கும்.

Apart from grand chariot there are 4 more cars for the lord's consort, Subramanya, Ganapathi and Sandikaswerar respectively. All the chariots are large, but relatively smaller than the Great Thear of Tiruvarur. This grand Chariot is extensively decorated with wooden carvings and finishes. It requires a minimum of few thousand people to pull the chariot around the four surrounding streets of the temple.
