This sculpture of Darpana Sundari is world famous and most skillful artistic work. There are about 40 sculptures outside wall of the temple.
The temples at Belur are carved out of soap stone (steatite), this stone is soft and easy to chisel but attains rock hard firmness when exposed to the atmosphere. These were quarried from Tumkur about 200 kms away. To maintain the shine of the temple the stone is treated with chemical wash and then wax polished once in ten years
Hoysala empire popularised this soap stone architecture.

The temple is adorned with a number sculptures of dancers and musicians outside. They are about 40 in numbers and they are at 25 feet in height at lintel level. These well polished soapstone sculptures add beauty to the temple.

The Chennakeshava Temple, Belur, is a 12th-century Hindu temple in the Hassan district of Karnataka state, India. It was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE, on the banks of the Yagachi River in Belur also called Velapura, an early Hoysala Empire capital. The temple was built over three generations and took 103 years to finish.It was repeatedly damaged and plundered during wars, repeatedly rebuilt and repaired over its history.
