Brahmapurisvara Temple is one of earliest Chola temple near Thanjavur ( Others being Narthamalai Vijayacholiswarm, Koranganathar temple at Srinivasa nallur and Moovar temple at Kodumbalur) The temple was constructed under the joint reign of Aditya-I and Parantaka-I, a time of intense temple building across Tamil Nadu. Aditya converted several ancient Shiva temples into more permanent granite structures on both banks of Cauvery River, while Parantaka provided a golden roof for the ancient Shiva temple at Chidambaram. But of all their works, the Brahmapurisvara Temple at Pullamangai is undoubtedly finest example of what is now known as the Parantaka School of architecture.

The Brahmapurisvara temple at Pullamangai characterises the extraordinary quality of early Chola sculpture. The temples of this period were not very large. The purpose was not to inspire awe through size and grandeur but to take one to the world of gentleness that can be found within one. The grace of the figures and their profoundly peaceful expressions awaken in one a sense of the sublime. The figures are fully occupied with the miracle of creation and the sense of stillness that comes from this absorption-(The Art of India by Benoy K Behl)
Date:ca 910 CE
One of the salient features of Chola architecture is presence of Bootha ganas, yalis and Dwarabalakas. Booth ganas are attendents of Lord Siva and always accompany him

Sri Brahmapurisvara Temple follows the typical plan of Chola temples from this age, having a sanctum sanctorum, artha mandapa, mukha mandapa and shrines for the parivaara devatas (secondary deities).
The Lord of this temple Shiva as Brahamapurisvarar is also known as Alandurai Mahadevar. The temple has been revered by the verses of Sambandhar, one of the Nayanmars.
Lingodbhavamurthy is an iconic representation of Shiva, installed in the rear devakoshta (niche) of the garbagriha (sanctum) of all Shiva temples. The story of Lingodbhavar is that of the attempts of Vishnu and Bhrama to discover the origins (the beginning Aadi and the end Antha) of Shiva.
