The Chettinad Raja‟s Palace, home of the Chettiar family, was built in 1912.• The pillars around the courtyard are in Burma teak, and there is picturesque combination of scarlet tiles and sloping woodwork. Chettinad houses at Kanadukathan have unique in architecture and design. After visiting many houses there I have noticed several common features.They are divided into many portions(kattus).Each house in chettinad is made up of Mugappu, Valavu, Irandan kattu, Moondran kattu & thottam etc .Pials (திண்ணை) are very beautiful. so also courtyard(முற்றம்)
Central court yard serves many purposes.

Athankudi tiles are used in all houses.The Athangudi tiles are popular handmade decorative floor tiles, originating from the Chettinadu region of Tamil Nadu. Athangudi tiles are traditionally designed and completely handmade, which add charm to the interiors of a house. These flower tiles of Athangudi stands out for its class, bringing forth the rich cultural heritage of the Karaikudi. The raw materials used for making athangudi tiles are the local soil, cement, baby jelly and synthetic oxides.
