Chidambaram Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Siva.
Chidambaram ( சிதம்பரம் ,தில்லை)is one of the five Pancha Bootha Sthalas, each representing one of the five natural elements; Chidambaram represents akasha (aether). The other four temples in this category are: Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswara,Trichy (water), Kanchi Ekambareswara (earth)Kanchipuram, Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswara (fire),Thiruvanna malai and Kalahasti Nathar (wind),Kalahasti
Thandava here is Ananda thandava of Lord Nataraja (Siva)- cosmic dance.
Another important aspect is Chidambaram is one of the Five Sabhas. Chidambram represents Por Sabai or Ponnambalam (பொன்னம்பலம்) . The other Sabhas are at Thiruvalangadu (Rathina Sabai -ruby), Madurai (Velliambalam -silver ),Tirunelveli ( Thamira Sabai-copper ), Kutralam (Chitra Sabai-painting).
All the main Saivite Nayanmars,namely Thirugnana Sambandhar, Appar,Sundarar and Manicka vasakar visited this holy shrine and it is said that they entered this temple from all the four directions ie thro entrances of South,West,North and East Gopurams denoting four different margas or pathways.
Gold plated gopuram is the one of the attractions of this temple.
Chidambaram is supposed to be oldest of all Saivite temples and that is why in all Thirumurai concerts Oduvars conclude with the words "Thiruchitrambalam".
