Trying to find a better way to get the fake-leatherette of a Yashica D TLR.

I must admit that this plastic fake leatherette from Yashica is about the worst i ever laid my hands on !!
This must be a nigthmare for everyone wanting to service something on the interior of these TLR's !!

The glue they used holds very well and that black plastic is extremely brittle. Nice combination :-(

Good that i was warned and started to do some dry tests first on a spareparts D-body before laying my hands on that Yashica-E :-)

Things i have tried :
1) Very slowly and carefully prying with needles and tootsticks. Plastic breaks.
2) Using a broader but very sharp X-acto knife. Plastic breaks.
2) Heat, weakens the glue but also the plastic. Plastic breaks.
3) Lighterfluid, no effect on the glue. Luckily also not on the plastic.
4) White spirit, no effect on the glue. Luckily also not on the plastic.
5) Acetone, dissolves the glue. But, as you might have guessed, also the plastic.
6) Alcohol Ketonatus 96%. Dissolves the glue but also the plastic (slightly less then acetone)
7) Xylene (Xylol). No apparant effect on glue but plastic gets even more brittle

Yes, of course i am not the only one struggling with Yashicas leatherette quality ;-)

Trying to find a better way to get the fake-leatherette of a Yashica D TLR.

Whilst waiting for the delivery of some Xylene (boy, how hard it is to get that stuff), i tried yet another approach on my sparepart Yashica-D bodies leatherette.

Now with help of a Heat Sealing Iron which i had used before for the covering of RC-planes.

I also reinforced the leatherette by applying masking tape.

Again, no joy :-(

The heat doesn't do anything to the glue. It still sticks vehemently.

Also heating up the knife blade didn't bring any improvements.

Hope the Xylene (my last hope) will soon be delivered.

Pffffffffffwwwwwwwwwwehhh......................survived :-)

Like walking on a mine-field ;-)

Removing this front fake "leatherette" from my Yashica-E TLR is indeed a very tedious job. It took more then an hour to remove just this small piece.

A small amount of IPA Cleaner softens the glue for about a minute of so (without dissolving the plastic leatherette). In that time it is possible to inch forward with the Dentists Hook underneath the fake "leatherette".

This solution seems to work here but is of course not the way to go for a professional camera service shop were time counts
