Kodak Retina Automatic 1.

After i removed what i thought was the lens retaining ring in the backside of the Retina, suddenly the whole lens/shutter dropped from the body. Oops !

I just wanted to clean the diaphragma blades with some lighterfluid and thought that by taking away the lens backelement i could reach them.

Must have removed the wrong ring :-(

Here you see the ring just before removal (see red arrow). This Ring can quite easily be removed with a lens spanner tool. Turn ccw.

After desoldering the red wire from the shutter the whole Prontormat-S can be put aside. Here the naked body of the Retina. Nice camera, pity only that problems are hard to repair.

Kodak Retina Automatic 1.

Well, with the Alfred Gauthier Prontormat-S shutter so conveniently away from the body it's a good time to study some of it's innards.

This is a view on the backside.

During filmtransport the shutter is armed by rotating the Shutter Cocking Axle 180 degrees cw (clockwise) as seen from this side.
During this motion also the Step Cam Ring is turned ccw so that the Step Cam is just free from the Needle Follower and locks in that position

When the shutterbutton is pressed (and not blocked) the Shutter Release
unlocks the Step Cam Ring which then rotates cw by springforce till it hits the Needle Follower. So the rotational angle of the Needle Follower determines how far the Step Cam Ring can rotate and so also how far the Diaphragma Blades are closed because these are connected to this Ring . Next the shutter itself is fired.

The above sequence with the Step Cam is only valid for the shutter used in the AUTO mode. In B or Flash Mode the diaphragma is set by the shutter mode ring. So even the Retina Automatic 1 can be used in a kind of manual mode when you set the shutter mode ring to a diaphragma setting in the Flash mode range. The shutterspeed in Flash mode is 1/30 Second.

On the rim of the shutterhousing there is an (in height) oval shaped slit. Only in the AUTO-position of the Shutter mode ring the Shutter Button Deblocking Pin on the Kodaks housing (not visible in this picture) is NOT pushed in. I assume that in that case the Shutter Button Deblocking is only possible when there is enough light catched by the Selenium photocell and that the mechanisms for that are somewhere in the body of the camera.

There is also a Pin sticking out of this shutter. It's heigth out of the shutter is altered whenever one of the lens focus distance symbols o, oo, ooo is reached. This heigth difference is made visible in the viewfinder of the Retina were you see the same symbols appearing. This makes changing the focus-zone (Portrait, Group, Landscape) possible without looking at the focus distance scale on the lens.

To the Post for Electric Contact was soldered the red wire. It's just leading to the flash synchronisation contact somewhere in the shutter.

A closer view on the "naked" frontside.

Here you see the counterparts of the items described in photo (04).

IMO the Needle Follower has to transmit the lightvalue to the Prontormat shutter.
