I'm not joking. In checking our field guide to mushrooms, this one, found on a trail at the arboretum we recently visited, looks like a Chicken Mushroom. The description, region and time of year fits, too.
Shockingly Chicken Mushrooms are considered a choice edible. And yes, it tastes like chicken. BUT, the field guide warns, it becomes less digestible as it ages. Clearly, this one has been around for quite some time, and now falls into the "bugly" category - big and ugly. So NO nibbling!
*** And regardless to what my field guide says, no way am I ever sampling anything found outdoors which it claims is edible, Only mushrooms I'm ever eating are those bought at the grocery store, found on a pizza, or served at a restaurant.
